Road to Democracy: Non-violent option to solve complex Somalia issues?
For the first time in 15 years, Somali parliament was seated to debate some tough issues facing Somalia. Although many had focused the parliamentary brawl the that broke out in March 2005, the fact that Somalis debated peacefully without AK-47 was a step in the right direction.
Many issues still divide the parliament and the Somalis as a whole:
- Should foreign troops be brought in to pacify the country or should it be left alone for the Somali to handle security on their own?
- Should foreign troops including the neighboring countries – Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti?
- What would be the role of the neighboring states, if included in the foreign troops?
These and many other questions require serious debate within the Transitional Federal Govern (TFG), among the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) and among the general public. |
