TFG vs. UIC: Will they Clash or Reconcile?

The prime Minister of Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government Ali Mohamed Gedi present his list of new cabinet members, the final hurdle before the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) head to Khartoum for talks later this month. Full story

Puntland, Gal-Mudug, UIC and Ethiopian Army

This week, the President of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland invited Ethiopian troops to the Central Somali town of Galkayo to bolster Puntland defense  against advancing UIC militia.  The Ethiopian troops have been arming the newly created Gal-Mudug State militia lead by Abdi Qaybdiid, member of the now defunct Anti-Terror Alliance defeated by the UIC.  Full story.

General situation
The Islamic Courts have reportedly continued to extend their influence both south and north of the capital. In Mogadishu itself the situation is stable for the moment and people are coping as best they can.  Full story

Sharif Hassan Sh. Adan to head to Mogadishu along with 70 MPs

Sources close to the Speaker of Somali Parliament, Shariif Hassan Sh. Adan say he may be planning to lead a parliamentary delegation to Mogadishu to negotiate with the UIC directly.  With Prime Minister Gedi surviving no confidence vote then forming his new government, Shariif Hassan is said to be concerned that Gedi-led delegation will not be able to negotiate in good faith with the UIC in Khartoum if talks were held August 31, as scheduled.  Full story.

UIC Declares war on Ethiopia

Speaking at a ceremony for a newly created Court in Mogadishu, the UIC Executive Leader Shiekh Shariif Sheikh Ahmed called for “all peoples” where Ethiopian troops were seen entering Somalia to rise up against the invasion.  He pledged UIC support if people took up arms against Ethiopian “invading” Ethiopian troops.
